Prestonfield Primary School: PE Policy 23/24

Our curriculum will aim to facilitate meaningful learning experiences for our pupils through physical education, physical activity, and sport. Through this curriculum, we will promote lots of gameplay and equip learners with the necessary knowledge and physical, mental, social, and emotional skills to be able to play games effectively. We do this in the hope our children enjoy playing games and are encouraged to access sporting opportunities out with the school day, cultivating an attitude for lifelong learning and engagement in physical activity.

PE Programme

P3-P7 pupils will have 2 and a half hours of PE and Health and Wellbeing every week led by Mr Mason. P1-P2 class teachers will deliver PE for their own classes but will work closely with Mr Mason in planning lessons in cohesion with the rest of our curriculum. The PE programme encourages support during lessons from parents and carers, particularly in the early years.

Every learner will have 2-3 lessons each week and will be planned to be complimentary but different so that every week children can:

  • develop the key social and emotional elements of game play
  • develop balance and coordination through travelling
  • enhance object control e.g., dribbling with a ball
  • work individually, in pairs and in small groups
  • play cooperatively with and competitively against others
  • develop gross and fine motor skills
  • be creative
  • develop stamina, speed
  • strengthen muscles and bones
  • work inside and outside

Extra Curriculars & Community Partners

We work closely with our Active Schools coordinator, Robert Ure, to put on clubs after school which are representative of the local sports clubs we have in our community. This is to create pathways for our pupils and families to access preferred sports in and outside of school. This year, the school/staff will run their own clubs which will complement the Active Schools extra-curricular programme too.

In addition, we will collaborate with a range of partners to provide opportunities through PE, Physical Activity and Sport during the school year. P5 will have have a block of swimming at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, P5-P7 will receive Bikeability lessons from Sustrans, P1-P4 will also gain further physical activity with our Places for Leisure rep Paul Sanderson. We are also delighted to have re-established a partnership with Cameron House Community Education Centre where we will have access to their sports facilities on a Thursday.

Sport & Competition

This session we will be looking to afford pupils and teams the challenge and excitement of taking part in competitive matches, tournaments, competitions and festivals. Pupils will have the opportunity to take part in competitive sport against each other, but also against other schools. Most recently, last year’s P4-P7 pupils competed in weekly football matches against other Edinburgh schools.

Family Engagement

The PE, physical activity and sport we facilitate at Prestonfield should not be a standalone thing. There are lots of benefits to reap from leading a physically active lifestyle. We will always be seeking opportunities to have families involved in what we’re doing. Whether that be supporting with clubs or attending sports weeks and other events.
